Every year, the Review awards several editors with recognition for their exceptional dedication to the Review. This includes the Gertrude Brick Award for the Best Student Note, the Frank E. Maloney Award for Outstanding Candidate, the D.T. Smith Award for Best Associate Editor, the Gertrude Brick Award for Outstanding Board Member, and the George W. Milam Case Comment Award. These editors are recognized below.

Gertrude Brick Award for Best Student Note

To promote active participation in the Florida Law Review and foster a passion for legal writing, alumnus Albert Brick established the Gertrude Brick Memorial Fund in honor of his mother. This award now recognizes the first-year Law Review member who authors the most outstanding Note. The editors listed below have been honored as the Brick Award Winner for their respective years on the Review.

Frank E. Maloney Award for Outstanding Candidate

In 1946, Frank E. Maloney, as one of only eight professors at the University of Florida College of Law, was pivotal in the foundation of the Florida Law Review. Alongside the first Editor in Chief, Harold B. Crosby, he helped garner support from Governor Millard F. Caldwell in 1947 to fund the Review. Maloney’s admiration for the new editors was evident when he described them as “an unusually capable group of students.” Maloney’s influence extended beyond the Review, as he served as the Dean of the University of Florida College of Law from 1958 to 1970.

Each year, in homage to Maloney’s legacy and vision, the Review awards a 2L candidate the Frank E. Maloney Award for Outstanding Candidate, honoring those who personify the “unusually capable group” spirit that Maloney celebrated.

D.T. Smith Award for Best Associate Editor

In 1968, Professor David T. Smith joined the University Faculty and simultaneously took on the role of Law Review’s faculty advisor. For fourteen consecutive years, his unwavering commitment to the Review was evident. To honor Professor Smith’s enduring legacy and dedication, the Review annually bestows the D.T. Smith Award for Best Associate Editor upon an Editor who mirrors his fervent passion.
